Kempt
Build your own Mac care app with AI.
Kempt is a free recipe you hand to your own AI coding tool. It interviews you, looks over your Mac without changing anything, and lets you decide how much it's allowed to do, from read-only health checks to cleanup that asks before every move. Then it builds and tests a private app that runs only on your computer. Your files never leave your Mac.
I built Kempt for my own Mac, then turned the recipe into something anyone can use to build their own.
The setup page asks a few questions and hands you one ready-made prompt. Or paste this line into an AI coding tool on your Mac:
Read https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kempt-kit/kempt/main/KEMPT.md and follow it to build me my own computer care tool.
Your own AI writes the app on your computer; nobody else has tested the code it writes for you. Anything that moves files can go wrong, so have a current backup first and read each proposal before approving it. Shared as is, with no warranty.
How it works
- It starts with a warning and checks that you have a current backup.
- It asks a few questions. Quick setup is about three.
- It takes a read-only look at your Mac.
- It builds and tests the app in phases, then gives you one command to start the background checks.
What you get
- Background checks for space, memory, leaks, security, drive health and updates.
- Optional cleanup that always goes to the Trash, with undo, and asks first.
- Optional local AI that renames PDFs, searches by meaning and reads screenshots.
- A native menu-bar command center with eleven complete themes: Native, Vector, Synthwave, Glass, Press, Amber CRT, Moss, Atelier, Blueprint, Sorbet and Abyss.
Works with
AI coding tools that can run commands on a Mac: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot in agent mode.
A chat-only AI can't run commands, so it gets a read-only health check instead.
Updates
Your app checks once a week and tells you when a new version is out. To update, tell your AI:
Update my tool from the latest Kempt.
For an email when a new version ships, open the releases and choose Watch › Custom › Releases.
