121 tranni or tranni This fts into my theme of 'girls on film' which spans a variety of silver gelatin and digital formats. Here I am elevating the physical form of the photographic image itself to artefact; think Joe Tilson and Diapositive or Transparency, Clip-o-Matic Lips, the Five Senses: Taste et al 1967-9. The image also reflect my fascination with the way women paint their faces. 44 x 30 cm on A3+ limited to 50 signed giclée prints For details of alternative sizes email me |

Is this an image of a transparency, a most popular form of colour photograph for many years? They were often referred to as slides or trannis. The word also refers to transvestites, men who like to dress and make up as women. Is she a tranni or a real girl? Is that a true image of her or of the painted mask she chooses to wear? In fashion periods when heavy make-up is popular among women, it is easy for trannis to adopt their disguise. This woman was photographed in 1960 on a tranni, but not Ansco. copyright © Colin Robinson 1960-2008 |
