At what stage does cosmetic make-up become a mask? It's a matter of degree, of taste, of intent, of opinion. A skillfully painted face puts the art in artifice.

The text reads:

But the face the painted shrine, five so long shining points of jelly-eaten, filed and beloved (look how long red pink they are) finger nails, weighed down, can't move my fingers for rings and painted nails. But the face, that painted shrine from which five long painted nails wipe off strands of blonde, ash-blonde pink hair from tangling with soot black three pairs of yard-long bush thick Exotica lashes, can't tell which are three dimensional or which are painted, painted alternate black and white all round. Now a strand sticks to the inch-thick gloss on those exaggerated wet, luscious, sharply over-painted kiss me slowly lips painted. My sex life for a brush. And the complexion is there but my dear it takes me all week! Well half an hour anyway Really I'm spotty and blotchy underneath, but who cares, he likes it this way so I ladle it on. Oh yes, he pays and wouldn't have it any other way. Oh I've smudged it, must just pop in the loo. And the complexion half hour complexion all American pan Max pan Factor Panstick, thick and smooth, quite an art, brushes and fingers and pads and white highlights (but I haven't any cheekbones really you know) thank you Max. I wonder what he'll make me do tonight – red ciré I think. Then there're the hollows – thank you Max – dark olive shade. Hundred degrees in the shade. He gets so hot and worked up. No not you Max darling – I get worked up when I paint just thinking of him the result creamy paint. Masses of powder paint and perfume white highlights then the eyes. Oh god another three quarters of an hour. Shut up and keep painting. Thick black everywhere lash brushes galore. It must be sharp, not a smudge, every line is beautiful long thick beautiful pointed painted and pointed. Outlines inlines socket lines and bright glossy colours – more paint please. (You're sure it's not a bit too gawdy? No.) Ouch! the pain paint pluck my brows away all for him arch feather surprised eye look. White paint under the arch before that deep dark black painted socket the blaze colour lids blaze talk from over-painted eyes. Now five pairs of the longest I could get. £3 a throw but it’s worth every lash. Cleopatra extends to my ears but mind she doesn't clash with my feathered arches. God this paint's so thick – jewels under my eyes. I wonder if he prefers silver spots or black? Here we go this is where the story really starts. Pass the chisel brush loads of paint thick gloss glaze gaze he'll gaze all right fixed on my lips ooze wide over-curved full pink dark outline white high-light bottom full makes him want to bite it. Now gloss. Mix with paint. Another half an hour but look stare at me. What contrasts powdered face soot lashes coloured eyes and now this!
